Bandera de Arabia Saudí. Se utiliza desde 1932, aunque su versión actual data de 1973. Los colores son los tradicionales del islam, el verde y el blanco. En el centro aparece escrita la profesión de fe, uno de los cinco pilares del islam (No hay más dios que Alá, y Mahoma es su Profeta). Bajo el texto hay una espada en horizontal, simbolizando las victorias de Ibn Saud, el fundador del país y su primer monarca. Al incluir una frase sagrada, la bandera no se emplea de manera trivial, como en camisetas u otros elementos.

Geografía

Arabia Saudita es un extenso país situado al oeste de Asia, en Oriente Próximo. Ocupa las tres cuartas partes de la península arábiga, limitando al norte con Kuwait e Irak, al este con el golfo pérsico, Catar, Emiratos Árabes Unidos y Omán, al sur con Yemen y al oeste con el mar Rojo y Jordania. Así, tiene un largo litoral tanto al mar Rojo como al golfo pérsico.

Su nombre procede de una palabra semítica muy antigua del siglo IX a. C., aunque su significado no está claro y hay varias teorías, como que podría significar “oeste”, “nómada”, “desierto”, “mezcla” o “comerciante”. En cualquier caso, se empleó por primera vez para definir a un protoestado árabe en el siglo IV d. C. En cuanto a Saudita, procede del nombre de la familia real del país desde su creación, los Al Saud. Este nombre es oficial desde 1932 y Arabia Saudí es el único país del mundo, junto a Liechtenstein, cuyo nombre alude a la familia reinante. 

 

El clima de Arabia Saudí es principalmente desértico, con temperaturas muy altas durante el día y bruscos descensos por la noche. Las precipitaciones son muy bajas y suelen ser en forma de tormentas puntuales. En verano las temperaturas pueden ascender hasta 45 e incluso 50 grados en el interior, mientras que en la costa suelen ser más suaves por influencia marítima. La única excepción es la provincia de Asir, en el suroeste, que tiene un clima tropical con influencia monzónica, por lo que las temperaturas son más suaves y también hay muchas más precipitaciones que en el resto del país. En cuanto a su relieve, Arabia Saudita es bastante llana, en especial el centro del país, que es una enorme meseta. Al oeste se sitúa la cordillera de Asir, que incluye las mayores elevaciones de Arabia, junto al monte Sawda, en el sur, con 3.000 metros de altitud. Por lo demás, el principal accidente geográfico son los desiertos, que ocupan casi toda la extensión de Arabia, lo que hace que haya escasez hídrica casi constante y tengan que desalinizar el agua del mar.

Para su gran extensión Arabia Saudita no está muy poblada, casi 36 millones de habitantes. La población se divide entre los habitantes de las ciudades, que trabajan en servicios y en la industria petrolera, fundamental para el país; los campesinos en las zonas rurales, con un nivel de vida en general bajo; y los nómadas beduinos, que constituyen menos del 20 % de la población. Las principales ciudades son Riad, la capital, situada en el centro del país con unos ocho millones de habitantes; Yida, en la costa del mar Rojo; La Meca y Medina, estas dos últimas ciudades con una gran relevancia histórica para el islam.

La economía de Arabia Saudí se basa sobre todo en el petróleo, descubierto en los años 30 y que ha sido el punto de partida de la construcción del actual Estado. Es el primer exportador mundial y dispone de la cuarta parte de las reservas del mundo. La industria, aparte del petróleo, es también importante, en campos como el cemento o el acero. La agricultura es pobre y los servicios están en desarrollo, en especial el turismo gracias a que Arabia Saudí es un destino de peregrinación para los musulmanes.

Historia

La historia de Arabia no entiende de las divisiones modernas ya que es común a toda la península arábiga. Desde la Antigüedad la zona ha estado poblada, aunque de manera muy dispersa debido al clima desértico que predomina en la península. Así, había grupos nómadas y también algunas pequeñas ciudades, principalmente cerca de las costas, como en el actual Yemen y las conocidas Medina y La Meca en Arabia Saudita.

El comienzo del islam, con Mahoma, comerciante de La Meca, influyó en la configuración de la actual Arabia, que todavía hoy tiene un notable influjo en los aspectos religiosos y culturales de los países de habla árabe, teniendo como principal rival a Egipto, mucho más poblado; y a Irán entre los países islámicos, al ser este de mayoría chií, mientras que Arabia es suní, la principal rama del islam.

Tras la desintegración del Imperio islámico en el siglo XIII, hubo varios califatos y sultanatos, además de división política generalizada en la península arábiga. Los turcos aprovecharon esto para expandir sus dominios también a la península, conquistando toda la costa del mar Rojo, incluidas las ciudades santas de La Meca y Medina, y establecieron su propio califato. El Imperio otomano o turco existió entre el siglo XV y el XX. La Primera Guerra Mundial tuvo como uno de sus escenarios Oriente Próximo ya que los árabes se aliaron con Gran Bretaña en contra de los turcos. Una de las familias aliadas con los británicos fueron los Al Saud, con el hasta entonces emir de Néyed desde 1902: Abdelaziz bin Saud. El Néyed ocupaba la zona centro de la actual Arabia Saudí y no es casualidad que la capital sea Riad, en esa región.

Tras la victoria en la guerra, los saudíes se enfrentaron a sus rivales en la región, los hachemitas, que controlaban toda la franja costera del mar Rojo. En 1925 lograron hacerse con esta (los hachemitas tuvieron que contentarse con reinar en Jordania, hasta hoy) y fundaron la actual Arabia Saudí, que recibió ese nombre, como hemos comentado previamente, en 1932. Reino Unido reconoció la independencia del país y se fijaron sus fronteras, no pudiendo expandirse más ya que los actuales Omán, Yemen o Emiratos eran aún colonias británicas.

El descubrimiento de petróleo en los años 30 consolidó a la dinastía saudí y durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial el país permaneció neutral. Tras este conflicto comenzó su alianza con Estados Unidos ante el avance del socialismo en otros países de habla árabe como Siria o Egipto. Pasaron las décadas y Arabia Saudita mantuvo su auge económico de la mano del petróleo, así como su alianza con Estados Unidos. Esta, junto a sus propios intereses políticos, la llevó a participar en la guerra del Golfo de 1990 tras la invasión de Kuwait por parte de Irak.

En todas esas décadas hubo escasos cambios políticos en el país. Arabia Saudí sigue siendo hoy una monarquía absoluta, aunque en 1992 se creó el Consejo Consultivo y muy lentamente se están reconociendo algunos derechos a las mujeres (que aún son consideradas menores de edad y están a cargo de un hombre), aunque el país sigue organizándose de acuerdo a la ley islámica y nunca ha celebrado elecciones. Tampoco existen partidos políticos y aspectos como la homosexualidad están terminantemente prohibidos y castigados incluso con la pena de muerte.

Vuelve Eurovisión

La pandemia de covid-19 hizo que el mundo se paralizara y que todavía hoy, más de un año después, siga a medio gas. Entre los eventos que canceló estuvo el Festival de la Canción de Eurovisión de 2020, que se iba a celebrar en Róterdam, Países Bajos. Este año sí se va a celebrar: conocemos mejor el virus y sabemos cómo afrontarlo, además de que la vacunación contra el mismo ya está en marcha.

Así, la sede en mayo volverá a ser Róterdam, aunque con considerables cambios respecto a lo habitual en este festival. No habrá apenas público y está por ver si los artistas podrán ir presencialmente a Róterdam, aunque en principio parece que así será. En el festival de Eurovisión Junior del año pasado, en noviembre, los artistas se quedaron en sus países y grabaron su actuación, que se retransmitió en televisión el día del festival. Sin embargo, varios países parece que hicieron playback y ello desincentiva repetir esa experiencia en la versión adulta de este año.

En cualquier caso, ya tenemos la lista de canciones candidatas, un total de 39 debido a que Armenia ha decidido no participar debido a su difícil situación tras una breve guerra contra Azerbaiyán. Tampoco participará Bielorrusia, pero porque ha sido descalificada por la Unión Europea de Radiodifusión (UER, ente que agrupa a todas las televisiones públicas europeas y de otros países y que no tiene relación con la Unión Europea) al presentar canciones con un claro mensaje político a favor del presidente bielorruso, Lukashenko. Eurovisión fue creado para unir a los pueblos europeos a través de la música, no para hacer propaganda de ningún líder, y menos aún del bielorruso, acusado de infringir los derechos humanos y que gobierna el país con mano de hierro desde hace más de dos décadas.

En los demás países, hay todo tipo de estilos este año. Unos cuantos repiten el artista del año pasado, que no pudo participar debido a la cancelación, pero cambiando la canción ya que las candidatas deben haberse presentado este año. Los países que repiten artista son España con Blas Cantó, Australia, Austria, Azerbaiyán, Bélgica, Bulgaria, Eslovenia, Estonia, Georgia, Grecia, Irlanda, Islandia, Israel, Letonia, Lituania, Macedonia del Norte, Malta, Moldavia, Países Bajos, Reino Unido, República Checa, Rumania, San Marino, Serbia, Suiza y Ucrania. Es decir, 26 de 39. De entre estos, algunos han mejorado su tema pero la mayoría está algo por debajo que el año pasado, y veremos cuántos superan las semifinales.

Recordemos que hay dos semifinales debido a que hay tantos países que si participasen todos en una única gala esta sería eterna. Así, de los 39 países solo habrá 26 en la final del sábado 22 de mayo.

Primera semifinal (por orden de actuación):

Macedonia del Norte, Lituania, Suecia, Eslovenia, Australia, Irlanda, Rusia, Noruega, Chipre, Croacia, Azerbaiyán, Malta, Israel, Ucrania, Rumania, Bélgica

Varios de los favoritos están en esta semifinal, como Malta, Chipre o Lituania. Parece que tienen menos posibilidades Macedonia del Norte, Eslovenia, Irlanda o Bélgica, pero en Eurovisión nunca se sabe. En esta semifinal podrán votar también Alemania, Italia y Países Bajos, que ya están clasificados para la final.

Segunda semifinal:

Austria, Moldavia, Polonia, San Marino, Serbia, Islandia, República Checa, Grecia, Estonia, Dinamarca, Bulgaria, Suiza, Finlandia, Letonia, Georgia, Portugal, Albania

Esta semifinal puede ser más competitiva. Parece claro que pasarán favoritos como Suiza, Bulgaria, San Marino o Serbia pero otros estarán indecisos hasta el final. Y otros como Portugal, Georgia o Polonia lo tendrán más difícil. También podrán votar España, Francia y Reino Unido, ya clasificados para la final.
